Physical therapy

Sanford Health Occupational Medicine Clinic physical therapy takes a team approach to managing care of the injured worker. Physical therapy is an adjunct treatment of the worker's medical care. It is our goal to effectively treat and rehabilitate the injured worker to allow them to return to work in a timely manner.

The physical therapists at Sanford Health Occupational Medicine Clinic provide treatment to help decrease pain and improve range of motion and strength, enabling the injured worker to return to their previous level of function and job requirements. Rehabilitation can be achieved through therapeutic exercise, education and training regarding a worker's body mechanics, posture and ergonomic safety. Physical therapy also offers treatments including ultrasound, massage, electrical stimulation, and spinal traction to help with pain, inflammation and muscle spasms.

The rehabilitation staff are trained to perform fit-for-duty (physical capabilities) assessments, workability assessments, ergonomic assessments, functional capacity evaluations and functional job analysis.

Chiropractic care

Most work-related injuries involve muscles, joints, bones and nerves. Overwhelmingly, more than half of on-the-job injuries are in the back. Sanford Health Occupational Medicine Clinic in Bismarck has a chiropractor on staff that specializes in treating these types of problems and can do so without medication intervention and surgery.

Chiropractic care is a hands-on approach to healthcare that includes patient examination, diagnosis and treatment. Chiropractors have broad diagnostic skills and are trained to recommend therapeutic and rehabilitative exercises.

The most common therapeutic procedure performed by chiropractors is spinal manipulation, also called chiropractic adjustment. The purpose of this manipulation is to restore joint mobility. Other therapeutic tools such as ultrasound, massage, electrical muscle stimulation and cold or hot packs are used to help with pain, inflammation or spasm.

Workability

Sanford Health Occupational Medicine Clinic collaborates effectively to assure patient safety comes first. One of the ways the clinic does this is by providing objective, workability assessments. A workability assesses the workers ability to perform functional tasks involving the injured body part. This test assists the provider in determining safe activity restrictions in the process of returning the injured worker back to their previous level of work.

Functional capacity evaluation

A functional capacity evaluation (FCE) is a comprehensive test used to determine the overall ability to perform safely at work. It is often ordered by an injured worker's physician, claims adjuster or case manager as a tool for determining a person's readiness to return to work after injury.

The testing consists of dynamic strength, positional tolerance and mobility tasks which are calculated to determine an overall safe level of work. These results are based on the worker's ability to complete an eight-hour workday. An FCE may be general-testing all abilities of the injured worker-or job specific-capabilities are compared to the worker's current job description. The Sanford Health Occupational Medicine Clinic offers one-day or two-day testing, depending on the needs of the company, referral source or injured worker. Functional capacity evaluations are performed at the Sanford Health Occupational Medicine Clinic by FCE-certified physical therapists or athletic trainers.
