Sanford Medical Center opens Joint Replacement Center
(Bismarck, N.D.)—The new Joint Replacement Center at Sanford Medical Center in Bismarck has been open for less than four months, but it has already made a major difference in the delivery of care for patients in need of total knee and hip replacements.
The Joint Replacement Center – a unit in the medical center dedicated to the care of patients who undergo total knee and hip replacements with the goal of providing quicker recovery and decreased length of stay for the patients – opened in late August and is the first such program in the region. Since opening, more than 100 patients have completed their joint replacement journeys at the Joint Replacement Center. Those who have had knee replacements have gone home more than a day sooner on average, while those who have had hip replacements have seen their time in the hospital trimmed by half a day.W
hile staying in the Joint Replacement Center, patients have private rooms tailored to meet the needs of joint replacement patients, and the center follows a wellness model of care, meaning patients wear their own clothes instead of hospital gowns and are as active as possible during their stay. Patients participate in group therapy right on the unit and follow a daily, evidence-based schedule designed to help them return home sooner. All of the nursing staff have specialized training in care for total hip and knee replacements. A dedicated orthopedic nurse navigator provides education to help patients prepare for surgery, guides patients through their stay in the medical center and follows up with patients after they return home to make sure they are on their road to recovery.
Before opening the Joint Replacement Center, Sanford Medical Center already was a Blue Distinction Center for knee and hip replacements with quality and value designations. The Joint Replacement Center further helps the medical center serve its patients and help them in their recovery.
