Course Description

Treatment for head and neck cancer can result in alteration in voice, speech and swallow functioning. This talk will review the types of impairment seen after surgery, primary chemoradiotherapy (CXRT) and combined treatment for head and neck cancer. Outcomes of voice, speech and swallow impairment, oral function, performance status and quality of life in this population will be reviewed. A novel cut-off measure of tongue strength in the surgically treated oral cancer patient will be discussed. Functional outcomes over time in patients treated with primary chemoradiotherapy will be reviewed. Data on utility of prophylactic swallow exercise in the CXRT population will be examined. In depth review of videofluoroscopic swallow studies will be included in this course.
