Accreditations/designations

The western region of Sanford Health, headquartered in Bismarck, is a non-profit, integrated health system with clinic locations in Bismarck, Dickinson, Jamestown, Mandan and Minot. Sanford Bismarck consists of a 223-bed hospital, four multi-specialty clinics, a college of nursing, seven primary care clinics, three kidney dialysis centers, three occupational health clinics, four walk-in clinics, three long-term care facilities and a comprehensive group of health services in western and central North Dakota. Key accreditations and quality awards include: Joint Commission, American College of Surgeons Level II Emergency and Trauma Center, and Magnet Recognition Program®.

American College of Cardiology Foundation’s NCDR® ACTION Registry®–GWTG Platinum Performance Achievement Award

The award recognizes Sanford Health’s commitment and success in implementing a higher standard of care for heart attack patients. The Bismarck region of Sanford Health consistently followed the treatment guidelines in ACTION Registry®-GWTG Premier for eight consecutive quarters and met a performance standard of 90 percent for specific performance measures. Sanford Health is one of only 256 hospitals nationwide to receive the honor. ACTION Registry–GWTG is a partnership between the American College of Cardiology Foundation and the American Heart Association with partnering support from the American College of Emergency Physicians, Society of Cardiovascular Patient Care. American Heart Association’s Get With The Guidlines® Stroke Bronze Quality Achievement Award

Get With The Guidelines–Stroke program helps hospital teams provide the most up-to-date, research-based guidelines with the goal of faster recovery and reducing death and disability for stroke patients. Sanford Medical Center in Bismarck earned the award by meeting specific quality achievement measures for the rapid diagnosis and treatment of stroke patients at a set level for a designated period. These measures include proper use of medications and aggressive risk-reduction therapies aimed at reducing death and disability and improving the lives of stroke patients.


American Heart Association’s Mission: Lifeline® Quality Achievement Award for heart attack care
Hospitals involved in Mission: Lifeline are part of a system that makes sure STEMI (the most severe form of heart attack) patients get the right care they need, as quickly as possible. Mission: Lifeline focuses on improving the system of care for these patients and at the same time improving care for all heart attack patients. Sanford Medical Center in Bismarck is the only healthcare institution in western North Dakota to receive this award, which speaks to its commitment and success in implementing high standards of care for heart attack patients.


American College of Radiology (ACR) Gold Seal of Accreditation for Breast Ultrasound and the ACR Breast Magnetic Resonance Imaging Accreditation
Having these two accreditations indicates a facility has maintained a high standard of breast imaging through quality control, quality assurance and image quality. On receiving the breast ultrasound accreditation and with the other three accreditations Sanford Radiology already has (ultrasound-guided breast biopsy, stereotactic breast biopsy and mammography), the facility has also been designated as a Breast Imaging Center of Excellence by the ACR Commission on Quality and Safety and the Commission on Breast Imaging. The Breast Imaging Center of Excellence (BICOE) designation is awarded to breast imaging centers that achieve excellence by seeking and earning accreditation in all of the ACR’s voluntary breast-imaging accreditation programs and modules, in addition to the mandatory Mammography Accreditation Program.


American Society for Metabolic and Bariatric Surgery Bariatric Surgery Center of Excellence (MBSAQIP)
The Bismarck region of Sanford Health received re-designation as a Bariatric Surgery Center of Excellence by the American Society for Metabolic & Bariatric Surgery.  This accreditation acknowledges the Bismarck region’s commitment to providing quality improvement and patient safety for bariatric surgery patients. It also demonstrates our ability to meet the needs of bariatric surgery patients by providing multidisciplinary, high-quality, patient-centered care.

Reverified as Level II Trauma Center
The American College of Surgeons has reverified Sanford Medical Center in Bismarck as a Level II Trauma Center. This achievement recognizes the trauma center’s dedication to providing high quality care for injured patients.

Level II is the highest possible verification Sanford Bismarck is able to achieve. The Bismarck region was initially designated as Level II in 1995.


ANCC Magnet® recognition
The Magnet Recognition Program recognizes health care organizations around the world that provide nursing excellence. The Bismarck region of Sanford Health is a Magnet® -designated health care institution as part of the American Nurses Credentialing Center’s (ANCC) Magnet Recognition Program®, positioning the institution in the top 1 percent of facilities nationwide for nursing excellence. This credential is the highest honor an institution can receive for professional nursing practice. The Bismarck region, which includes clinics in Bismarck, Mandan, Minot and Dickinson is the only Magnet-designated health care institution in North Dakota.



Sanford Bismarck receives Blue Distinction® Center + Designation for quality
and efficiency

Blue Cross Blue Shield of North Dakota has named Sanford Bismarck a Blue Distinction Center + for Knee and Hip Replacement, and Spine Surgery.

Blue Distinction Centers are part of a national designation program that recognizes facilities that demonstrate expertise in delivering quality specialty care. The designation historically focused solely on quality, but it has recently expanded to include more robust quality measures focused on improved patient health and safety as well as new cost-efficiency measures.

The Blue Distinction Centers program awards qualifying hospitals either a “quality” designation and/or a “value” designation. The basics of each designation are as follows:

Quality designation = Meets quality-focused criteria that emphasize patient safety and outcomes.

Value designation = Meets both quality-focused criteria that emphasize patient safety and outcomes, as well as cost of care measures.
The Bismarck region of Sanford Health received both quality and value designations for Knee and Hip Replacement, and Spine Surgery.

Knee and Hip Replacement
Blue Distinction Centers for Knee and Hip Replacement provide comprehensive inpatient knee and hip replacement services, including total knee replacement and total hip replacement surgeries.

Spine Surgery
Blue Distinction Centers for Spine Surgery provide comprehensive inpatient spine surgery services, including discectomy, fusion and decompression procedures

Sanford Health earns breast center designation
Sanford Health in Bismarck has been granted full accreditation designation by the National Accreditation Program for Breast Centers (NAPBC), a program administered by the American College of Surgeons.  Accreditation by the NAPBC is only given to those centers that have voluntarily committed to provide the highest level of quality breast care and that undergo a rigorous evaluation process and review of their performance. The Joint Commission's Gold Seal of Approval™ for certification as a Primary
Stroke Center
Sanford Medical Center Bismarck has earned The Joint Commission's Gold Seal of Approval™ for certification as a Primary Stroke Center. This designation recognizes Sanford Health's commitment to providing effective, timely care for stroke victims.

The Blue Distinction designation was created to recognize healthcare organizations that meet stringent quality criteria, as established by expert physician panels and national organizations. By meeting these requirements, the recognized centers demonstrate better outcomes and consistency of care and provide greater value for patients.

Sanford Medical Center Bismarck receives a Joint Commission accreditation renewal.

Sanford Medical Center Bismarck's perioperative staff receives the Surgical Information Systems Patient Impact Award. The award recognizes Sanford Health for success in increasing surgical care measurements that have a positive effect on patient safety.

Sanford Medical Center Bismarck earns Interdisciplinary Group Recognition Award from the National Academies of Practice.

Sanford Bismarck Laboratory and the Sanford Bismarck Histocompatibility Laboratory receive accreditation designations by the Accreditation Committee of the College of American Pathologists (CAP).

Maggie, Sanford Health Dakota Children's Advocacy Center's (DCAC) registered therapy dog, is named Pet of the Year in the professional category by the North Dakota Veterinary Medical Association.

A study released in the September edition of Consumer Reports gives Drs. Timothy Pansegrau and Sean Russell, Sanford cardiovascular surgeons, a ranking of three stars, which is the highest ranking possible. They are the only ones in the region to gain this distinction.

Sunset Drive Living Center is awarded a National Quality Award from the American Health Care Association and the National Center for Assisted Living.

The Commission on Cancer of the American College of Surgeons has awarded Sanford Cancer accreditation with commendation.

The Sanford Diabetes Center recently received recognition from the American Diabetes Association Education Recognition Program.

Sanford Health awarded rehabilitation accreditation
carf logo Sanford Medical Center Bismarck was recently re-accredited by the Commission on Accreditation of Rehabilitation Facilities (CARF) for three years for the following: inpatient rehabilitation programs—hospital (adults) and inpatient rehabilitation programs—hospital (children and adolescents). This is the ninth consecutive three-year accreditation outcome that CARF has awarded to Sanford Health.


Reverified as Level II Trauma Center
The American College of Surgeons has reverified Sanford Medical Center Bismarck as a Level II Trauma Center. This achievement recognizes the trauma center's dedication to providing high quality care for injured patients.

Digital mammography accreditation
Sanford North Mandan Clinic becomes accredited in digital mammography as the result of a recent survey by the American College of Radiology (ACR).

The American College of Radiology (ACR) awards Sanford Medical Center Bismarck a three-year term of accreditation in mammography as the result of a recent review. The ACR gold seal of accreditation represents the highest level of image quality and patient safety.

Thomson 2009 logo The annual Thomson Reuters award for cardiovascular services independently measures performance on eight key criteria related to cardiovascular care at the nation’s top performing acute care hospitals.



Level II Trauma Center
Sanford Medical Center Bismarck is designated by the state of North Dakota and verified by the American College of Surgeons as a Level II Trauma center. The hospital and medical staff are committed to excellence in trauma care.


Sanford Medical Center Bismarck Cardiac Rehabilitation awarded recertification
Sanford Cardiac Rehabilitation Program was recently awarded national recertification from the American Association of Cardiovascular and Pulmonary Rehabilitation (AACPR).

Sanford Cardiac Rehabilitation is a medically supervised program designed to help heart patients recover more quickly and to improve their overall physical, mental and social functioning. Cardiac rehabilitation also helps patients decrease their risk for another cardiac event. National research shows that cardiac death is 26 percent lower in patients who participated in a certified rehabilitation program, compared with those who did not.

Sanford Cancer awarded accreditation with commendation
Commission on Cancer The Commission on Cancer of the American College of Surgeons has awarded Sanford Cancer accreditation with commendation. The commission provides accreditation to cancer programs that voluntarily choose to apply and prove to have a commitment to provide the full scope of services required to diagnose, treat, rehabilitate and support those with cancer and their families. The center is accredited through 2011.
